In a significant milestone for the regional automotive supply chain, Saba Steel—a key subsidiary of the Mobarakeh Steel Group (MSC)—has successfully engineered and produced its first hot-rolled coils of HDT760C advanced high-strength steel (AHSS). This achievement marks the first time this strategic multiphase grade has been manufactured within the country, positioning Saba Steel as a specialized hub for sophisticated flat products tailored for the next generation of light and heavy vehicles. The production of HDT760C, a grade characterized by its complex metallurgical balance, is designed to replace costly imports for critical structural components, including vehicle axles and reinforcement parts.

The development of this grade is part of a broader strategic shift within Saba Steel to focus on high-value-added products. HDT760C belongs to the Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS) category, boasting a minimum yield strength of 600 MPa and a tensile strength of 760 MPa. Its unique microstructure, which integrates ferrite, bainite, and martensite phases, allows for an optimal combination of extreme strength and high ductility. This makes it particularly suitable for cold-pressing processes and applications requiring high resistance to edge cracking—a vital requirement for heavy-duty automotive chassis and axles.

Arash Hajipour, Technology Manager at Saba Steel, emphasized the strategic importance of this technical breakthrough in an international context.
“The successful production of HDT760C is a direct result of our investment in state-of-the-art equipment and the high-level technical expertise of our engineering teams. By mastering these complex metallurgical processes through domestic R&D and academic collaboration, we have managed to reach the quality benchmarks set by global industry leaders. Our goal is to ensure that the automotive sector has access to the highest world-class standards, enabling the production of safer, lighter, and more fuel-efficient vehicles by reducing structural weight without compromising integrity.”

The manufacturing process for such a grade involves extraordinary technical challenges, particularly during the melting and continuous casting stages. The alloy design utilizes precise concentrations of Chromium (Cr), Molybdenum (Mo), Titanium (Ti), and Niobium (Nb). These elements enhance the hardness of the slab but also complicate the casting and rolling phases by increasing the strength of the frozen shell, which exerts significant pressure on the casting segments. Overcoming these obstacles required advanced simulation software and meticulous control over secondary cooling parameters within the thin-slab casting units.

Syrus Asadi, Head of Steelmaking at Saba Steel, highlighted the rigorous quality control measures required to ensure the purity of the final product. “Producing specialized heats for the HDT760C grade demands exceptionally strict process controls within the melt shop. Given its application in high-stress structural components, the steel must be ‘ultra-clean’ with a minimal presence of impurities. We achieved these stringent requirements through precise slag management and refined alloying techniques. The result is a hot-rolled coil that meets the exact metallurgical specifications demanded by international automotive manufacturers, proving our capability to handle the most sensitive structural grades in the industry.”

Beyond the melting shop, the rolling process played a decisive role. To achieve the multiphase microstructure, engineers implemented precise force-parameter controls across the rolling stands and utilized specific cooling rates on the water-wall bed. This ensured the targeted phase transformation, providing the product with superior mechanical properties. With the successful localization of HDT760C, Saba Steel not only secures its position in the strategic steel supply chain but also demonstrates its readiness to compete on the global stage as a reliable provider of advanced automotive materials. This achievement is seen as the beginning of a new era for Mobarakeh Steel Group, as it continues to align its production capacity with the evolving demands of the global “Green Auto” and high-safety transportation sectors.
