Today, the global steel industry has crossed the traditional boundaries of production and entered a new era ; an era where artificial intelligence, data-driven design, and advanced metallurgy dictate the rules of the game. In this field, mere production quantity (tonnage) is no longer sufficient to guarantee competitiveness; instead, quality, innovation, and high value-added are the new drivers of progress. At Mobarakeh Steel Group, with a deep understanding of these shifting global paradigms, we are redefining our identity from a “mere manufacturer” to a “development-oriented entity in industrial, technological, and social dimensions”. This transformation is not a luxury choice, but a strategic necessity to maintain Iran’s position in international markets and fulfill the obligation to national sustainable development. We have defined three strategic directions for the future of Mobarakeh Steel: Circular Economy and Green Steel, Digital Transformation and Industry 4.0, and Development of Advanced Materials and Steels.
In the first dimension, environmental preservation is no longer a peripheral activity but the core of our business. Moving toward “Green Steel,” developing hydrogen-based reduction technologies, and transitioning to a low-carbon economy constitute our roadmap for competing in markets that will soon only welcome products with a low carbon footprint. In this regard, our pledge to reduce raw water withdrawal for industrial production from the Zayandeh Rud River to zero, through the full implementation of the Oman Sea water transfer mega-project, is a clear symbol of intelligent management of a vital resource. This tripartite water strategy relies on complete internal recycling, utilization of treated municipal wastewater, and water transfer from sustainable marine sources.
In the third dimension, the development of advanced materials is the heart of our value-creation strategy. Global trends confirm that the highest market growth belongs to advanced steels with modern applications (such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, and durable structures). At Mobarakeh Steel, by localizing strategic grades such as S355MLO (for offshore structures) and S235J2W (weathering steel), we have taken a decisive step towards self-sufficiency and the production of high-quality products compliant with European standards. This commitment has made us one of the “driest steelmakers in the world” in terms of specific water consumption.
The most significant technological revolution in metallurgy today is the “Material Genome Initiative”. This initiative fundamentally changes the model for designing and developing new materials. By utilizing Artificial Intelligence and Big Data, the synthesis process for new materials, which previously took 3 to 10 years, can now be reduced to less than one year, and in some cases, even under three months. Mobarakeh Steel is seriously entering this field and is planning to launch the first Material Genome laboratory in the country in collaboration with esteemed universities. This path views the future of the steel industry as being dependent on mastering new technologies, artificial intelligence, and developing innovation infrastructure.
We acknowledge that national conditions (sanctions and energy restrictions) are challenging. However, our strategy is clear: to convert limitations into a competitive advantage. The Oman Sea water project, the localization of advanced technologies, and the focus on producing specialized grades are all geared toward achieving environmental and technological resilience. Our world-record specific water consumption (2.2 cubic meters per ton of slab) , and our leap in the product quality yield index (reaching 95.87%), attest to this resolve. The future of the steel industry belongs to groups that change their course towards advanced steels, digitalization, and Green Steel sooner. Mobarakeh Steel has embarked on this journey. We are determined, by relying on domestic knowledge, scientific collaboration, and developing technological infrastructure, to play an effective role in this global competition and make the name “Mobarakeh Steel” synonymous with quality and commitment in the global supply chain.
