The Environment Director of Mobarakeh Steel stated, on the occasion of receiving Iran’s first international certifications for greenhouse gas management and product carbon footprint, that at Mobarakeh Steel, the environment is viewed not merely as a legal requirement but as an integral part of the organization’s overarching strategy for sustainable development and competitiveness in global markets.

According to Irasin,Behnam Kaviani, Environment Director at Mobarakeh Steel, told Steel correspondent that the company considers environmental management not only as a legal obligation but as a core component of its strategic framework for sustainable development and global market competitiveness. The implementation of ISO 14001 began in 1376, and this system has since served as a foundation for systematically managing environmental aspects, playing a crucial role in enhancing the organization’s environmental performance.

He added that maintaining and continuously updating this system—through process documentation, internal audits, management of environmental aspects and risks, and performance monitoring—goes beyond mere compliance. It provides a platform for data-driven analysis, scientific decision-making, and continuous environmental improvement.

In this context, climate change, as one of the greatest contemporary environmental challenges, has impacted various dimensions of industrial activity. Rising global temperatures, drought, water resource crises, stricter international carbon regulations, and supply chain disruptions are direct risks for major industries such as steel. However, these threats also present opportunities for technological transformation, productivity enhancement, long-term cost reduction, brand improvement, and development of low-carbon markets. At Mobarakeh Steel, these opportunities are pursued strategically.

Kaviani emphasized that, to enhance environmental decision-making quality and achieve a sustainable environment, the company has prioritized the adoption of the ISO 14000 series of international standards. Within this framework, implementing ISO 14064-1 and ISO 14067 standards—enabling accurate, documented, and transparent measurement of greenhouse gases and carbon footprint—has been a key step in the company’s carbon management system.

The foundational data of this system is structured through a Life Cycle Inventory (LCI), helping identify critical emission points along the value chain. By defining indicators such as CO₂ intensity per ton of crude steel and comparing them with global benchmarks like World Steel, the environmental performance of units is monitored and analyzed from a process perspective.

He noted that this data is used not only for reporting and compliance but also as a basis for emission reduction projects, including energy consumption optimization, replacing fossil fuels with cleaner alternatives, minimizing raw material use, recycling waste, and redesigning high-carbon processes.

Mobarakeh Steel Leading Nationally and Regionally

Kaviani concluded that today, Mobarakeh Steel is a national and regional leader in areas such as life cycle analysis (LCA), carbon footprint assessment, greenhouse gas accounting, and environmental data management. This achievement is the result of cross-functional collaboration, commitment to transformation, and a scientific approach to environmental governance in the steel industry.
